Who are the Welsh Fire?

The Welsh Fire are one of the eight cricket teams who compete in The Hundred, with this franchise representing the country of Wales. This team play their home matches at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, with a men and ladies team using this ground and battling it out against the English teams in the competition.

Although the Welsh Fire certainly represent Wales thanks to their name and identity, the intention is to also incorporate Gloucestershire and Somerset as part of the overall mix. Indeed, the inaugural draft would see the team draw from these counties as well as Glamorgan.

Gary Kirsten became the first ever coach of the Welsh Fire men’s team and he was recruited after previously taking charge of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

The Hundred History of Welsh Fire

The first ever Hundred tournament only took place in 2021 and it was a baptism of fire for both the men and ladies teams that represented the Welsh Fire. The men’s side finished a lowly seventh in the standings, while the women’s side were bottom of the pile in eighth.

Jonny Bairstow was the original marquee signing when it came to the men’s draftee, while Katie George was the female equivalent.

Somerset wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Banton and Glamorgan batsman Colin Ingram were also domestic signings, while Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc were the two £125,000 signings, with Afghanistan’s Qais Ahmed being the other overseas signing.

When it came to third round signings, Ravi Rampaul and Ben Duckett were selected for £75,000, while the £60,000 signings were Simon Harmer and Qais Ahmed. The fifth round picks were Liam Plunkett and Ryan ten Doeschate.
