Who are the Manchester Originals?
The Manchester Originals are one of the eight Hundred franchises who compete in the men and ladies tournament every year. Based in Manchester, they represent Lancashire which is a proud cricket county that has produced a number of world-class players throughout their history.
In June 2019, it was decided that Manchester Originals would be formed with their current name, with players coming from Lancashire when it came to the first draft of the competition which started in 2021.
The Hundred History of Manchester Originals
The Manchester Originals are one of the few teams who represent just one county, thus giving them a stronger identity than some of The Hundred franchises which have seen a merger of two or more counties.
Shortly after deciding to set the team up and compete in The Hundred, it was decided in July 2019 that Simon Katich would become the first captain of the team. The former Australian international had also represented Lancashire as a player.
Katich had previous experience when it came to coaching Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League and he had previously taken charge of Royal Challengers Bangalore when it had come to the Indian Premier League.
When the inaugural The Hundred draft took place in October 2019, Jos Buttler was nominated captain after emerging as the centrally-contracted England player that could lead the team. Kate Cross became the first ladies captain of Manchester Originals, while Paul Shaw was the first ever women’s coach of the team.
