Who are the Southern Brave?

The Southern Brave are one of the eight franchises participating in The Hundred since the inaugural edition in 2021 and they represent the historic counties of Sussex and Hampshire. The team plays at its home ground, the Rose Bowl is Southampton and consists of a very strong core of players.

The Brave was founded in 2019, just before the official Hundred draft was held. They went on to assemble a very strong squad from there, consisting of some really experienced international players and some outrageous talent from Sussex and Hampshire.

The Hundred History of the Southern Brave

The Southern Brave formed a very strong squad for both men’s and women’s Hundred and they were tipped as the favourites to win right from the beginning. Although the Women’s team stumbled in the final hurdle and ended as the runners-up, the men’s team went all the way and won the title.

Within a few days of establishing the franchise, former Sri Lanka batter Mahela Jayawardene was announced as the coach of the men’s team while former England skipper Charlotte Edwards was appointed to coach the Women’s teams.

During the inaugural Hundred draft in October 2019, the Southern Brave picked up Jofra Archer as their headline men’s draftee while Anya Shrubsole was their headline women’s draftee. James Vince and Chris Jordan also joined Archer in the men’s team whereas Dani Wyatt was added to the Women’s roster along with Shrubsole.

Talking about the individual performance of the players in the tournament, James Vince finished as their highest run-scorer in the inaugural season with 229 runs to his name in 10 innings whereas Jake Lintott was the highest wicket-taker with 11 wickets to his name at a superb average of 19. George Garton also claimed 10 wickets while the likes of Quinton de Kock and Alex Davies scored 202 runs each as well.

For the Women’s team, Sophia Dunkley finished the highest run-scorer with 244 runs to her name at a superb average of 40.66. Amanda Wellington was the highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets to her name at an excellent average of 11.50.
