Who Are the Birmingham Phoenix?
The Birmingham Phoenix are one of the eight franchises participating in The Hundred men’s and women’s tournaments every year. They are based in Birmingham and represent the historic counties of Worcestershire and Warwickshire, which have produced some top talents and legendary players in England’s cricket history.
The franchise was first established in 2019 before the first official draft of the inaugural Hundred edition. They picked many talented men’s and women’s players from the two counties and formed a formidable core.
The Hundred History of the Birmingham Phoenix
The Birmingham Phoenix are one of the franchises in The Hundred that got the chance to pick players from more than one county and thus they had the luxury of tapping into a larger talent pool.
Within a few days of the Phoenix being set up, former Australia batter Andrew McDonald was announced as the men’s team coach. He got a star-studded coaching staff as well with the likes of Daniel Vettori, Jim Troughton and Alex Gidman as his assistants. A couple of months later, Ben Sawyer was appointed as the coach of the women’s team.
In the inaugural Hundred draft, the Phoenix picked up Chris Woakes as the headline men’s draftee and wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones was the headliner for the women’s team. The men’s side also drafted Moeen Ali and Pat Brown whereas the women’s side picked up another talented player in Kirstie Gordon.
When McDonald pulled out of the Hundred owing to bio-bubble fatigue, Vettori was named as the coach of the men’s team. Moeen Ali was named as the captain of the men’s team whereas Amy Jones was appointed to lead the women’s side.
