Who Are the London Spirit?
As the name suggests, London Spirit are a London-based Hundred franchise who have the honour of playing their home matches at Lord’s, with this ground based in leafy St John’s Wood. Although Lord’s is most associated with Middlesex, the London Spirit also aim to represent Northamptonshire and Essex.
London Spirit made their Hundred debut in 2021 and they were coached by the legendary Shane Warne, with the team struggling to land many victories. It meant that the capital-based side finished bottom of the pile, with Warne’s passing leading to a vacancy when it came to the head coach position.
Trevor Bayliss was able to step into the breach in 2022 and take charge of a team who were led into battle by captain Eoin Morgan. Bayliss had previously worked with one-day captain Morgan when it came to the England team between 2015-19.
The Hundred History of London Spirit
When the first ever Hundred draft took place in October 2019, then Rory Burns was the England centrally-contracted player who was acquired. Eoin Morgan was also snapped up and Dan Lawrence of Essex was another big signing for the first ever London Spirit squad.
It was a tricky first season for London Spirit who were only able to win one of their eight games played which left them bottom of the standings. After beating Birmingham Phoenix by three wickets, there was then a succession of defeats and they will be looking for an improved showing in 2022 and beyond.
The women’s team fared a good deal better in their first ever tournament and finished in fourth place out of eight teams. Australian players Amelia Kerr, Beth Mooney and Megan Schutt are the overseas quota hoping to make a positive impact.
