On Monday the 19th of December, the Big Bash League is well and truly in its flow now, with the Hobart Hurricanes hosting the team from the west and 4-time BBL champions the Perth Scorchers in Launceston.
This is both teams’ second match of the tournament with each side having different fortunes in their respective first outings. The Scorchers were victorious in their first game, beating rivals, the Sydney Sixers, by 38 runs in a replay of last year’s final. While the Hurricanes lost by 38 runs to the Melbourne Stars.
Obviously, T20 cricket is very volatile with its results, but it was still a surprise to see the Hurricanes lose to their Stars, with many tipping them to lift the trophy for the first time this season. With their strong squad and Ricky Ponting as coach, the bookies had them as favourites prior to the tournament.
The Scorchers are the most successful side in BBL history. It is difficult to bet against the Scorchers having another good season this year as well. Scorchers are again captained by middle-order batsman Ashton Turner.
Within the Scorchers ranks, they have Australian-capped players such as Ashton Agar, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye, Jason Behrendorff, and Josh Inglis. While they also have Adam Lyth and Stephen Eskinazi from England, and former South African captain Faf du Plessis as their overseas players.
Despite their contrasting starts to the tournament, we expect Hobart to bounce back strongly at home against the Scorchers. A team that is coached by Ricky Ponting will always be a very tricky team to play against.
