How To Bet On The ICC ODI World Cup

ICC One Day World Cup Intro

The Cricket World Cup is officially known as the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The World Cup is the international tournament for One Day International cricket (50 Over format) and is hosted by the International Cricket Council. It is held once every four years, with the first held in England in 1975. The tournament is considered by the ICC as the international cricket calendars “flagship event”.

The format of the tournament has varied greatly over the years, with more changes due for the 2027 and 2031 tournament. However, the format of the most recent tournament, 2019, and upcoming 2023 world cup consisted of ten teams with the host nation automatically qualifying, but the nine remaining teams undergo a qualification process the three years prior to the tournament. The tournament included a round-robin format where each of the ten teams play each other once, with the top four reaching the next stage, entering the semi-finals.

In total, over the years, twenty teams have competed in the world cup. However, no team has been as dominant as Australia who have won the tournament five times, including winning it three times in a row in 1999, 2003, and 2007. The only other teams to have won the competition multiple times are the West Indies and India who have both won the tournament twice. The most recent, and arguably the most famous win, was when England won the tournament in 2019, when they beat New Zealand in the final, for what is widely recognised as the greatest One Day International match of all time.

Some of the tournaments best performers are also considered to be some of the greatest cricketers of all time. For instance, Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most runs in World Cup tournaments, while Glenn McGrath holds the records for most wickets in World Cups.

Also, Ricky Ponting is recognised as the most successful at World Cups having lifted the trophy twice. Modern day players are also breaking world cup records and themselves becoming modern day greats, such as Rohit Sharma, who has hit the tied most hundreds at World Cups with six, while Mitchel Starc has taken the most wickets in a singular tournament with twenty-seven in 2019.

The Cricket World Cup is a good betting competition because it is crickets “flagship event”. It is also one of the worlds most viewed sporting event. The infrequency of the tournament (once every four years) makes it very appealing to betting fans when it occurs. Whilst the competitive nature and unpredictability of the tournament also makes it very exciting for betting fans to be able to get involved and be a part of cricket’s great tournament.

Sports betting is when a person tries to predict the future outcome of a particular sporting event, match, or in-play moment. Therefore, it is possible to place a bet on the Cricket World Cup tournament as a whole, a match within the tournament or a moment within a World Cup match. In order to bet on the Cricket World Cup, you firstly have to pick which betting site you would like to bet with. However, when choosing which betting site to use it is important to consider the types of offers that the various betting sites will provide.

Now that you know you are betting on the Cricket World Cup and have a sufficient basic knowledge about cricket and the World Cup event, you then choose what type of bet you want to make. For example, on an individual match (like Sri Lanka versus the West Indies), an in-play bet with in a match or a bet on the tournament as a whole (for example India to win the tournament). It is then important to review the available bets and betting odds between different betting sites to make sure you are getting the best offer for the bet that you want to make.

Once you have decided which betting sites has the best offers in terms of available bets and best odds you then make an account with the betting site and provide all the necessary information (e.g., a photo of your ID proving you are over 18). When you have completed this you are able to place a deposit down with the betting site.

Now that you have money on the betting site, you then choose which particular bet or bets you want to place and how much money out of your deposit you want to place on your bet. When you have finalised this then it is time to place your bet and keep up to date with what is happening in the sporting event, to see whether you win or not!

ICC WC Betting

Outright markets are usually the first market accessible and simplest form of betting for betting fans for the Cricket World Cup. The outright market for the World Cup is about betting on who you believe the winner of the tournament will be.

On paper, it is very hard to predict who the winner of the tournament will be. Cricket can be a very unpredictable sport, this is even more the case when it comes to the World Cup where the best teams in the world compete against each other.

There is such high expectations around the World Cup for teams and individual players, with it only coming occurring once every four years and the possibility of money bonuses that can lead to heightened levels of nerves for players and teams, leading to unpredictable performances.

The 2019 World Cup is a perfect example of this. England on their way to winning the tournament lost three games in the group stages but were able to go on and still win the tournament.

The pitches and host nation do also play a large part in the predictability of the tournament. Off previous tournaments, host nations of that tournament should be considered heavy favourites as India in 2011, Australia in 2015 and England in 2019 were the winners in the previous three tournaments and were also the host nations! Therefore, look out for India in 2023!

However, due to the tournament’s unpredictability, bookies factor this in and will provide punters with ‘each-way’ betting. An each-way bet is offered by bookmakers and consists of two separate bets, including a win bet and a place bet. For example, at the next World Cup, you could place an each-way bet on India to win the tournament and a place bet on them reaching the final.

ICC WC Match Betting

Match betting in cricket involves betting on the result of individual matches within a series or a tournament. In relation to the World Cup this would involve betting on the result of individual matches during the tournament in the group and finals stages. For example, a match between Bangladesh and South Africa, one could bet on Bangladesh to win or South Africa to win or even bet on a draw between the two sides.

Traditionally in the group stages there will always be matches that a considered bigger than others due to some countries’ respective rivalries such as Australia versus England and India against Pakistan. The finals stages of the cricket will be the most pressurised and competitive for teams and players as they are the knockout stages of the tournament, possibly deciding if you reach the final or win the tournament overall.

However, before the finals stage there are the group stages. As the last few group stage matches are played, these matches can be just as competitive as the final stage matches as teams may be in must win matches in order to progress to the final stages. Therefore, effectively becoming just as pressurizing and competitive as finals stage matches as they are pretty much knockout matches for some respective teams.

Furthermore, match betting can also focus on individual performances, for example, betting on who will be the player of the match or who will be the highest run scorer or wicket taker of the match. Match betting can also include the pre match coin toss to see who will bat or bowl first. The captains will toss a coin to decide who will bat and who will bowl and in match betting you are able to place a bet on which team will win the toss.

Player Betting

Cricket is about taking wickets and making runs, so betting markets offer bets on how many runs a batsmen may make and how many wickets a bowler may take. Player betting is the same for the World Cup, for batsmen and for bowlers, offers are made for each player in each innings of a match for who might make the most runs or take the most wickets from each team. Options are also offered for doubles, where one can bet on who will be the top run scorer/top wicket taker for each side in an innings.

Bookies also provide punters with options to bet on whether a batsmen or bowler will reach a certain batting or bowling milestone. For players earning runs in a match, a punter can place a bet on any player from either side to score more than fifty runs or more than one hundred runs. Whilst for bowlers taking wickets, a bet can be placed on bowlers from either side to take three or more and five or more wickets in a match.

Player betting also provides different options other than just milestones for batsmen and bowlers. For batsmen, punters are able to bet on over/under options for a certain number of runs for a batsman to score and the number of fours or sixes they may hit when a batsmen would be currently batting. For the previously mentioned player bets punters will be given cash out options however this may not be as likely for in-play betting.

In-play betting on players is also offered by betting sites. Top bowler markets are normally closed when the match starts, but top batting markets remain open. Within in-play betting markets you are also able to place bets on options such as which of the two batsmen who are currently batting you believe will be out next and also by mode of which dismissal you think a batsman who is currently batting would be out. Also, in terms of the bowling this could include an over/under options for how many runs they might concede in an over.

Team Betting

Similar to individual player betting, punters are also able to place bets on team. This is more typical for a team’s batting innings. Like individual player scores, betting sites also provide options for a team to score over or under a certain number of runs during their batting innings. In the fifty over format of cricket, the influence of T20 cricket has increased the skill levels of batsmen to score at a quicker run rate. A good score for a team could be anything greater than two-hundred and eighty.

There is also an in-play option to continue betting on the team score throughout their batting innings. However, like with any cricket format team scores tend to heavily depend on the pitch so it is worth looking at previous scores at the ground to see what a good ‘par’ total might be.

Cricket betting fans are also given the option to bet on whether they think a team will score more or less than a certain number of fours, sixes, or total boundaries during a team’s batting innings. This market can vary greatly depending on which teams are playing, the players in the team, the size of the boundaries, and what type of phase of the tournament the match is in, whether that be the finals of the group stages.

ICC WC Betting Specials

Bookies also offer ‘special markets’ whereby they provide punters with interesting and potentially different bets to the previously mentioned. These are usually random outside bets that typically have longer odds and are often labelled as ‘specials’.

Special market bets could typically include unusual bets. For example, special bets may include someone taking a hattrick which has only ever happened nine times in World Cup cricket or for there to be a ‘Super Over’, (where both teams scores are level) which occurred for the first and only time in the last World Cup final between England and New Zealand.

Special markets can also include various combinations of bets such as one player to make thirty or more runs, another player to take three or more wickets, and a third different player to take two catches and these bets are packaged together to make a ‘special’ which would typically have longer odds.
